The wild reindeer on Hardangervidda are one of the last large populations of wild reindeer in Europe. This region has been an important area for reindeer husbandry for many thousands of years, and both hunting and trapping have been a central part of the cultural history here. Management of the wild reindeer on Hardangervidda is strict, and hunting is carefully regulated to ensure a sustainable population.
We ask that you pay attention, keep your distance if you observe wild reindeer and behave calmly so that you do not frighten the animals. Wild reindeer that are frightened can flee over great distances, which makes hunting difficult. Frightened animals may also cross roads or dangerous areas, increasing the risk of collisions or falls.
So if you come across wild reindeer, keep calm - this way both hunters and hikers can enjoy the mountains together.
Good trip!
