Hunting time in Vinje

Autumn is a beautiful time for hiking in the mountains and forests in Rauland, but it is also a time for hunting. Already from August, the hunt for wild reindeer, deer and roe deer is well under way, while the moose hunt starts on 25 September. The hunting tradition is strong in Vinje, and it is important that everyone who travels in the countryside is aware of the hunting activity and takes account of both hunters and game.

Landowners in the municipality have both the right to hunt and the duty to manage the game resources on their properties. In Vinje there are long traditions of harvesting the game resources we have, and it is important to manage the resources in a good and sustainable way.

With around 70 elk and deer hunting teams in the municipality, there will at times be many hunters in the countryside. It is thus impossible to avoid meeting them from time to time. Utmarka is for everyone, but it is important to take care

The bulk of the hunting takes place in the first 3-4 weekends, while there is less hunting in November and December. In the main, deer hunting takes place on "all areas" in the municipality. Roe deer, elk and deer are hunted below the tree line, while wild reindeer are hunted above the tree line.

Vinje municipality's advice to those who use the fields in autumn is:

  • Dress visibly, preferably in bright colours.
  • Use the dirt roads and the marked paths.
  • Use the paths/vegans near the city centre, especially on the first weekends.
  • Get in touch with the hunters you meet, ask where they hunt and where you should go.
  • Show consideration for each other!
