Theme evening: From trail and tow to county road in Rauland

Group walking with horses over stone bridge in mountain landscape, text villages in between. Black and white photo.

From time immemorial, people have wandered in our area. These have left traces in the land that we find today. They followed each other where it was easiest to go. In this way, it became a track (path) that was easy to follow.

As the population grew and communication increased, these trails became more visible in the countryside. Now they became trails that were even easier to follow. We can still find some of these today on the Hardangervidda plateau. Between the villages of Rauland and Vinje, the path turned into a cart road, and eventually became a county road. This last was a struggle that mainly took place in the 18th and 1900th centuries. The will to build a road was probably usually good, but the funds were unfortunately small. It was a struggle that took time. But eventually it became a road that wheeled vehicles such as cars could travel on.

These irrigations and developments are the theme of the Rauland History Society's theme evening in March. Birger Kjelingtveit will narrate and show pictures and short video clips on the subject.

Afterwards there will be coffee, cakes and pastries.
