About Myllargutvegen

Myllargutvegen takes off from E134 at Nutheim in Flatdal and follows county road 3422 until Straume bridge, Øyfjell, where you enter county road 3410 until you meet fylkes 37 in Austbø and follows it to Krossen on Rauland. From there go Myllargutvegen after the former. 362 through Rauland, along Totak to Arabygdi and Edland where you join the E134 in Haukeligrend.

The Myllargutvegen starts at Nutheim Gjestgiveri, an old tourist town, which has been in operation since 1870. The villages of Flatdal and Åmotsdal have been a "cultural pasture" for painters and graphic artists throughout the last two centuries. Well-known artists such as Erik Werenskiold, Henrik Sørensen, Kai Fjell and Harald Kihle find inspiration in this environment. Nutheim guesthouse with the old Hjartdal rectory, is widely known as an artist center. The bilet artists Erlend and Terje Grøstad and the bilet carvers Trygve Barstad and Ellen Grøstad are staying here.

First you drive past Dalsgrendi. On the left side of the river you can see a section in the rock face, called "Dalsbonden"

You follow county road 3422, and after 4 km you come to a fork in the road Long glue. An alternative to Myllargutvegen is the road through Long glue and along Gjevarvatn to Øyfjell. (toll road)

Before you get to Langlim, you drive past Mandal chapel. Olav Bringa (Ole Bringen) traveled to America in 1863, aged 16. In his older days, he sent a letter with 8000 dollars to the priest in Seljord and wished that a church should be built in Mandal. It became a long church which was inaugurated in 1954. The altarpiece is painted by Terje Grøstad, and the four evangelists on the pulpit are painted by Kai Fjell, Harald Kihle, Willi Midelfart and Henrik Sørensen.

The road to Langlim first came in 1956. The name Langlim probably comes from the fact that during the Black Death only one woman, named Liv, survived. This woman is said to have been very tall and elderly say that the name of the village comes from this. There was a school in Langlim until 1960. The school still stands as it was, but it is built on a village house which is available for loan to anyone who wants it. Of the annual events there, there is a ski race every Maundy Thursday and a flea market in autumn.

From here you can walk along the old church road over Vasen to Åmotsdal

Further on county road 3422 you will come to Kleivi on the left. Jarand Åsmundson Rønjom built the loft here in 1784. It must be said to be a high point in Norwegian wooden architecture and is preserved.

Here, au rydda is revealed that a crevasse (port) on the right-hand side where the animal farms spent the night on the way to the stables in the old days

You are now driving into Dyrlandsdalen, a wild and beautiful valley, with old farms and homesteads on both sides. Dyrlandsdalen school was closed in 1954. The village team took over the building at the end of the 1990s. Seljord Husflidslag currently rents the school building for activities such as weaving courses and other Painting exhibitions 2 weekends each summer in July with Inger Helene Bekkeli. Then the cafe is open. If someone wishes to have an exhibition or sale, the second floor is available for rent.

The Eva Bull Holtes Museum and the homestead Sneie are located here. Surveyor Eva Bull Holte and her husband Johan B. Holte bought the homestead Sneie from Nigard Groven in Åmotsdal in the mid-50s and used it as a vacation spot. Here they gradually collected several old abandoned houses in addition to those that had been there before.

Eva had a studio and good working conditions in Sneie and was very attached to the town. After Eva's passing, Johan decided to build a museum for Eva's art. The museum was located at Sneie and inaugurated in 1999.

The art collection at Sneie shows ceramic work, drawings, graphics and paintings. Eva is best known for her landscape paintings with a tight and fixed composition and a limited color palette. She found her motivations both outside Europe, in Denmark, Great Britain and at home in Norway. In recent years, it was Telemark and especially the mountain home in Åmotsdal that featured in her image.

Every year, a guest exhibitor is invited who has an exhibition in the museum.

The old farmhouse on Sneie stands as it did when Eva and Johan lived there, and is open to people who want to see it during the summer season.

He was what I call a fiddler, but he was good at dancing. So when Torgeir heard about Jon Kjos, he went there to learn mowing. He guessed at Kjos au seinare and the parting greeting to Åne was: "You haven't got the book right"

The road to Cheers gang on from Kvambekk. Jon Kvammen moved here in 1803 and then took the name Kjos. He took Torgeir as an apprentice when he realized what was in that boy. Slåttar after Jon is i.a. Kvamsvogga, Jon vestafe, Kjosjasen, Sollidkrokan and me belong Kvamshallingen played by Hauk Buen. Myllarguten later said that the hay for Jon Kjos should have been made in a gold box!

You cross the older walkway over Kvambekkheia at the highest point. To the left along this road, you will see several stone cairns. The pilgrims could protect themselves by throwing a stone at them. Before it descends towards the village, there is a sign  The Dancer's Stone (marked footpath 1,5 km). There is a large flat rock, where the people of the Seder met and danced. Brureberget. About 1/2 km. for Lognvikvatn and just along the road on the left, is a steep rock wall with a pit like a door. Old folk memories and legends are often associated with specially marked mounds and rocks. And here in Brureberget, a whole brotherhood was acquired by the Tussans, it is said. When Bruferdi passed by on his way to the church, the gate was on the far wall. It shone so beautifully inside the rock. A small man dressed in gray came out with a bowl of beer. He offered to drink, as he piled into the forest and the men of the house followed unwillingly. The gate slid again and no one has seen them since.

By Austbø you enter on national highway 37. Specially marked for Austbø grendi are all rose-painted ice trains from the first half of the 1800th century: on Mo-gardane, Nystog, Svalastog and Skeie. Wow. The carver Dyre and the writer Aslaug Vaa have family roots in this hamlet. Vågrendi is known from the figure of Dyre Vaa (1600th century), which is the basis of Welhaven's poem "The most generous farmer in Vinje owes Dyre Vaa to mention"

Sandviki is a warm inn, where, among other things, elm grows. Almebork was an important food supplement in times of need. This elm forest is protected. There is a great danger of lacerations around here. The farmhouse on the farm is secured with a large plough-shaped stone wall.

In Arabygdi lie down Cozy, Myllarheimen. Myllarguten, Torgeir Augundson, was born in Sauherad in 1801. He played at weddings as an eight-year-old. In 1831 he met Ole Bull, a meeting that came to have a lot to say for both of them and for Norwegian music and folk music. He was brought to Bergen in 1850, to play at the opening of Det Norske Theater. In 1852 he bought Sudistog Øygarden, but he was no farmer and soon had to leave the farm. Myllarguten then moved to the homestead Kose, where he lived the last years of his life, and died in 1872 in great poverty.

Coziness is no museum. Owner and operator is Vinje municipality. The museum is open during the summer. Monument over Myllarguten by Dyre Vaa.

Urdbøuri. At the upper end of Total lies this several hundred meter wide uri, which according to popular imagination is supposed to be Thor with the hammer that made it. When he struck the hammer in Nipanuten, he lost the hammer and it was lost in the ura. Then Tor had to go down and search, he threw one stone after another, soon here and soon there, and so he went on until he found his hammer. But then it had also become a road through the clock. To this day, this host calls for Torsvegen. That it was not very good, one can well imagine, such hasty work as it was, but the road has been used by the villagers for all the years until the motorway came along. Here the horses have walked with heavy cleavers, and here the livestock have had trouble both in autumn and spring. Torsvegen is marked and easy to walk, approx. 1 km.

The next fork in the road leads to Songavatnet. From Songavegen thread it sideways (boom). Gjøsløys, a nice, old detached farm. Furthermore, there is a good footpath along it Explore, past old barns, which tell of barnyards in older times.

Songavegen leads further into The song pond  og Trolldal Dam. The song pond is 1050 m long and 37 m high. It was the largest dam plant in Northern Europe when it was first completed in the 60s.

According to the regulations Songavatnet, with the highest regulated elevation of 975 m

Myllargutvegen continues past The vein dam. By Bridge fleet stands the mill house where Myllarguten met Fossegrimen. Edland/Haukeli is the school, business and business center for Øvre Vinje, with an important traffic hub at tallaks bridge. Here, mail In shop, various accommodation offers and food service places. Several businesses, Haukelitunet goods center, and in Tallaksbrukrysset has Haukeli Husflidslag his Husflidsbue

At Edland school there is also a community center Storeguthallen.  In the party hall, there is a permanent exhibition of a total of 17 works with motifs from Dream quince, which the priest and visual artist Sigmund Lystrup gave to the municipality. On Edland stay safe Haugen where Myllarguten offered a time. He was married to Ingeber Rikardsdotter Haugen and offered at a place called The pile of rice. There is nothing left of this house site, but one knows where the house stood.

The Myllargutvegen ends at the fork with the E134 at Haukelitunet in Haukeligrend.

We thank you for the trip and wish you a good trip and welcome back.
