Welcome to the Kråkeroe stable
Experience herd life at the Kråkeroe stable with milking, butter and cheese making (chewing and chinning).
Lina and Sondre Aasan run milk production on the farm Sundbø in Flatdal and saddle farming on Kråkeroe in the summer. Both on the farm and in the stable, they process milk into cheese and butter. They invest in the local breed of Telemark cattle and have a low-intensity production with a lot of forage and pasture, but little concentrated feed for the 15 dairy cows. There was an own dairy on the farm 100 years ago, in 2019 the couple built a new dairy on the farm which has the same name as the old one: Flatdal Dairy.
Stølsdrifta is central to the operating system and is the highlight of the annual cycle for people and livestock. For three months, three generations and all livestock move seven miles and 800 meters up to the stable Kråkeroe on the edge of Hardangervidda. Here, the cows roam freely on a 1500-acre area with juicy mountain grass that produces milk with unique qualities. At the stable there is also a café where guests can be served stable food and get an insight into life on the seat. At Kråkeroe, there has been stable farming, agriculture and other outdoor industries for around 2000 years. Lina and Sondre carry on old traditions and specialize in knåost, a cheese with long traditions in West Telemark.
