Concert in Årestoga: Guro Kvifte Nesheim and Floating Sofa Quartet

KYSTNÆRT is an artistic collaboration between the award-winning Finnish/Danish/Swedish folk music group Floating Sofa Quartet and the Norwegian fiddle and harding fiddle player Guro Kvifte Nesheim. In the project, five fiddler men and women from four Nordic countries meet to delve into their common musical traditions, from the Nordic coastal regions.

For almost ten years, the Floating Sofa Quartet has worked with Nordic folk music across national borders, and they have gradually distinguished themselves as one of the leading younger groups on the international folk music scene. The vision has always been to shed light on the differences and similarities of the Nordic traditions, and at the same time create music that both preserves and renews the Nordic cultural heritage. The band received a Danish Music Award for the album "Neighbourhood", which won the award as Folk Release of the Year in 2019. The justification stated, among other things "All of them are breathtaking instrumentalists, and are known for delivering a formidable ensemble and a present live performance when they tour around.(...) The award is given for creating personal interpretations of traditional music as well as one's own with passion, sincerity and at a high level of quality compositions.(…)”

The idea for the KYSTNÆRT project arose in connection with the Showcase festival Folkelarm in Oslo 2021 when the outstanding young fiddler Guro Kvifte Nesheim - for pandemic reasons - had to step in as a substitute for FSQ's permanent fiddler Clara Tesch. In the meeting with the Floating Sofa Quartet, Guro was inspired to explore the repertoire from coastal areas in Agder. This is a repertoire she has carried with her throughout her upbringing, but never really delved into.

KYSTNÆRT- is based on Agder music, with detours to, among other places, Læsø, Bornholm, Bohuslän, Skåne, Østerbotten, Korpo and Åland. The music is instrumental and traditional, but at the same time welcoming and timeless. In several cases, we are talking about migratory music without a "fixed address", music that has traveled far and wide and been shaped by those who played it in the Skagerak, Kattegat and the Baltic Sea.
